Banshee

Banshees are born out of bitterness and malice, their existence a curse upon the living. Their shrieks and wails can pierce any stone, brick, or window. The sound burrows into the souls of those who hear it. They are a harbinger of death and often appear before a tragic death or group of deaths.

The stories behind banshees usually include the idea that they were once mortal women who met violent ends and now haunt the living, wanting to bring their pain and misery to those that they can find.
