The Arcane Eclipse upheaved all structure and knowledge in the world. Many people found themselves with powers that they couldn't control. There were constant tales of accidental curses and surprise conjurations. Seemingly random destruction was constant. Several schools would eventually emerge in an attempt to train people, all with varying degrees of success and credibility.

Leaders of the nations at the time and prominent magic schools came together in the Arcane Gathering. They argued and debated for weeks on whether magic should be controlled and how to stop disasters. Their answer came in 208:Mysts when, two centuries after the introduction of magic, the Magimancy was founded. The Magimancy would oversee magical education, set up academies, and establish basic regulations and consequences for the abuse of magic.

The Magimancy brought order to chaos, magical mishaps decreased, and more people started learning how to use their powers responsibly. However, many new mages felt that it was a leash around their neck, claiming to prevent disaster while snuffing out inventions and innovation.

The founding of the Magimancy is like building a dam to control a river. It may have prevented a flood, but many mages wonder what would have been had the river been left to continue its own path.
