Alkland Report on the Contact Expedition

Your Majesty,

I send this report in the wake of an unexpected encounter that may impact the future of our kingdom. We have recently come into contact with a group of elven explorers from the distant land of Elori — a civilization little known to our realm. I regret to inform you that this contact was not under the most fortunate of circumstances, and the consequences are already in motion.

It appears that these elves have been wandering the western territories for some time. Their objective, as far as I can tell, was to extend their understanding of the world. Their expedition stumbled upon our borders. To say they were surprised would be an understatement. They returned to Elori with urgency.

By their reckoning, they have made a grand discovery. I can only imagine the reaction in their council chambers when they declare they have found a human civilization every bit as developed as their own. Their leader is likely already drafting diplomatic overtures. We must not be so quick to believe in their innocent motives. I have taken measures to infiltrate their lands through our own spies. What they found paints a picture more dangerous than they would have us believe. The mages of Elori, despite their supposed dedication to nature, have powers that could rival our strongest battalions. Their cities are well-fortified. Their people are formidable should they be provoked.

Your Majesty, I do not doubt that their leaders mean to contact you. We cannot afford to trust them blindly. Their curiosity may lead them to believe they have the right to roam our lands unchecked, and their diplomacy, though cloaked in goodwill, may soon turn to pressure. They will enforce their customs and traditions upon us. They will destroy our very way of life. I have already observed movements within their borders that suggest a more organized force preparing for something greater.

I humbly recommend that we strengthen our defenses and prepare for any forthcoming negotiations with caution. The discovery of Alkland by the elves will not go unanswered, but we must be ready to meet their overtures with both words and steel. Should this be mishandled, war may soon be upon us. In fact, it may be best that we begin to march our armies towards Elori. It is better we strike first than be caught in the woods with no way out.

I remain in your service,
